HPLC purity on a peptide COA — Canadian lab notes

What HPLC purity means on a Canadian research peptide Certificate of Analysis versus net peptide content. Research Use Only.

This article explains a documentation concept for qualified laboratories. It contains no dosage, administration, or therapeutic information.

Research Use Only

Certificates of Analysis discussed here describe lyophilized laboratory reagents for in vitro research, identity verification, and analytical method development. They are not drugs, supplements, cosmetics, or foods, and they are not for human or veterinary use.

What the HPLC figure represents

On a peptide Certificate of Analysis, the HPLC result is an attribute of the analyzed sample: it is the area percentage of the main peak relative to total integrated peak area at the stated wavelength and method. It is a characteristic of the chromatogram of the sample submitted to the laboratory.

The HPLC area-percent figure is not a statement of vial fill quantity. Net peptide content and fill quantity are separate attributes and are not inferred from an HPLC chromatogram. For a broader discussion of purity figures, see What does 99 percent purity mean for a research peptide.

Reading the certificate as a whole

A certificate is read together with its lot field, accession or test number, issuing laboratory, and any mass-spectrometry result. See How to read a peptide COA and the hosted certificates on the Certificates of Analysis page.

Canadian laboratory checklist

  • Confirm the issuing laboratory and accession or test number.
  • Confirm the compound name and lot match the vial label.
  • Read the HPLC result as a sample attribute, not a fill quantity.
  • Record any LC-MS or mass result alongside the HPLC figure.
  • Archive the certificate PDF with the product URL.
